During a hand, players each place chips into the pot, representing their wagers on the outcome of the hand. Each player must either call a bet, raise it or fold. If a player folds, they forfeit any chips that they put into the pot before that time. They may then choose to sit out of the hand by saying “sit.” If they do so, their cards will be discarded and they will no longer compete for the pot.
The first step in learning poker is to understand the rules of the game. Each betting interval has a specific set of rules. The player who makes the first bet is said to “open” the pot. Each player in turn must either call or raise the amount of the previous player’s bet, or they can “drop” and discard their hand. The highest ranked poker hand wins the pot.

After the dealer has dealt everyone 2 cards, the betting starts. If you like the value of your hand and think there’s a good chance that you will win, then say hit. If you have a pair and want to double up, say stay. If you have two matching cards, then say pair. If you have a straight or flush then say those words as well.
The next phase of the hand is called the flop. The flop will reveal 3 more community cards and the betting continues again. If you have a high pair or a flush then this is the time to bet. If you have a low pair then it’s a good idea to fold. This will save you a lot of money in the long run.
